Kate Adelie Sladen, named after the Adelie penguin that her father studied in Antarctica, grew up in Baltimore with screech owls, ducks, and quail as part of the family household. She assisted her ornithologist father on weekend trips to the Chesapeake Bay locating and recording neck-collared tundra swans. Kate's passion for the well-being of birds and animals manifests frequently in her work.

Kate received her M.F.A. in painting from University of Michigan, Rackham School of Graduate Studies, School of Art, Ann Arbor, Michigan (with teaching assistantships).

Kate’s B.F.A. in painting is from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, Maryland, magna cum laude (with merit award and a Three Arts Scholarship).

Awarded various artist residencies such as Dorland Mountain Colony, California, Ucross Foundation, Wyoming, and Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Montana, Kate painted western landscapes, as well as in Scotland and the Adirondack Mountains.

Recent trips to Italy, particularly to Rome and Florence, inspire Kate’s current oil painting series, A Dialogue With Michelangelo.

Kate has shown and sold her figure and landscape paintings in galleries across the nation, particularly in Maryland and Santa Fe. Santa Fe was her last home of fifteen years, and presently she resides with her husband and sons in Colorado.
